Earthshine
In addition to seeing the illuminated part of the Moon, you can sometimes see the unilluminated part as dimly lit (especially during the crescent phases). This is due to the sunlight reflecting off the Earth's surface onto the Moon, a phenomenon known as “Earthshine”.
