Azophi Crater
Below are photos I took of Azophi lunar crater. It's named after the 10th century Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi (also known by his Western name Azophi). Some noteworthy points about him are that:
- He made the earliest recorded observation of the Andromeda Galaxy in 964. This was the first galaxy other than the Milky Way to be mentioned in writing.
- He authored a special book entitled Kitab suwar al-kawakib (The Book of Fixed Stars)
- A minor planet is named after him: 12621 Alsufi
- On his 1113th birthday, he was commemorated on Google's logo
I took the below photo on May 27, 2023. Azophi crater is the somewhat polygonal crater towards the centre of the photo.
I took the below photos on April 10, 2023. They show where Azophi crater is in relation to the entire moon, as well as its size relative to other craters.
