The Supermoon (a poem)

The Supermoon

In the early hours of an August night
The moon was especially full and bright

It was the Sturgeon Moon I came to know
And it set my innermost thoughts aglow

Up at its beauty, I so wished to gaze
And to its Maker offer thanks and praise

I quickly finished my chores and readings
Anticipating the night’s proceedings

Then I prepared some tea and filled my cup
And went to the balcony, and looked up

There it was, illuminating the sky
Its surface seen by the unaided eye

Such brilliance displayed and further-made bold
By a clear dark night, a sight to behold

In a joyful bliss, just the moon and I
I stared in sweet silence, and hours passed by

I thought, this luminous inspiring light
Could move criminals and guide them aright

Its radiance could give life to the hearts
Engulfed in the shadows of the dark arts

A vision of this heavenly token
Could heal a soul that’s aching and broken

Who else is watching the moon at this time
And is thinking, the Lord is so sublime

As I pondered this signpost on the quest
It as the night’s host, and I as its guest

I recalled some sacred words I had read
In which the Full Moon of Madina ﷺ said,

“You will see your Lord as you see this moon…”
The night carried on with I in a swoon

A supermoon occurs when a full moon is at its perigee (the point in its orbit where its closest to earth). This makes the moon appear brighter and larger than a typical full moon.
