Supermoon

Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim

Al-Hamdu Lillah, I was fortunate to watch the supermoon last Wednesday for quite some time. It was a calm night with a clear sky and the moon was magnificent.

Supermoon (perigee syzygy) is a term describing a full moon that is at (or near) its closest approach to the earth in its elliptic orbit. In this case, the moon appears much bigger and brighter than usual.

Watching this sign from God Almighty brought about tranquility and reflection. Allah the Most High mentions the moon in the Holy Qur’an for example,

“It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). Nowise did God create this but in truth and righteousness. (Thus) doth He explain His Signs in detail, for those who understand. (10:5)

Upon seeing such a splendid full moon, one could not help but think of the beloved holy Prophet Sayyidina Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who is often likened to the (full) moon. The following account comes to mind:

Hadrat Jabir ibn Samura (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have said: I saw Allah's Messenger, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on a cloudless night, and he was wearing a red suit of clothes, so I started looking at him as well as at the moon, for he is indeed more beautiful, in my opinion, than the moon! (at-Tirmidhi)

Another example that comes to mind is the very well-known eulogy Tala'al Badru 'alayna (The full moon rises on us).

Yet another example is from Durud Taj, in which the Holy Prophet is referred to as "badr al-duja" (the full moon in darkness). May Allah bless him and grant him peace!
